Cheakamus Centre receives $20,000 from Rick Hansen Foundation

April 18, 2019

The Cheakamus Foundation for Environmental Learning is delighted to announce a $20,000 contribution from the Rick Hansen Foundation towards accessibility improvements at Cheakamus Centre.

This generous funding will go towards modifications to student cabins. The Cheakamus Centre cabins are an integral part of the outdoor experience for learners of all ages. The centre already has two fully accessible cabins. The funding from the Rick Hansen Foundation will allow for modifications to non-accessible cabins to improve accessibility. A "home away from home" for thousands of students who participate in multi-day environmental education programs each year, these upgrades demonstrate an ongoing commitment to inclusive learning environments.

"It's been a privilege for our team to work with the Rick Hansen Foundation on this program. We are calling the program Moving Forward because it is enabling us to move forward with our goals of inclusion. We're excited to be able to take additional steps to improve accessibility in our cabins," said Cathy Jenkins, project manager for campus renewal at Cheakamus Centre.

For over five decades, the centre has recognized and valued diversity as it contributes to the rich educational and community-based learning experiences that are central to the Centre's vision: To be a dynamic centre of excellence for environmental and indigenous cultural education, and a welcoming place for learning, gathering and sharing in nature.

Moving Forward is just one of many projects the Cheakamus Foundation for Environmental Learning has embarked on in support of the work of the centre. Initiatives include upgrades to existing facilities, and new public programs and customized offerings associated with Friends of Cheakamus
