Welcome Families of North Vancouver School District
"Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all"
~ Aristotle
Your child's school and teacher will continue to be your best guide to continuing learning at home while in-class instruction is suspended. We know that you as parents and guardians will need to adjust learning for your children in a way that is most meaningful for your family. This website with links to learning activities, tips and resources, is offered as support.
LEARNING AT HOME
You may find it helpful as you explore learning with your child, to provide structure with BC's Core Competencies. The
Core Competencies are sets of intellectual, personal, and social and
emotional proficiencies that all students need in order to engage in
deep, lifelong learning. There are three Core Competencies (Personal and Social, Communication, and Thinking) and each of these have sub-competencies. To start, you may wish to use one of the Self-Assessment of the Core Competencies tools (options
below) to engage your child in a conversation about their identity in
the world, both as an individual and as a member of the community. For
your guidance, we have provided instructions.

Throughout the month, when your child completes an assignment or activity, or even at times when learning happens in less structured ways at home, you might help them connect their learning back to this competency by encouraging reflection on their strengths or by acknowledging their action in support of others. At the end of the month your child can return to the same page of the self-assessment to reflect on their learning.

LEARNING INVOLVES PATIENCE AND TIME
Learning involves patience and time, and it is not limited to academic tasks or textbooks. Teachers understand that you will make decisions to help your child stay healthy and happy, and sometimes that may mean playing a board game or making cupcakes together. When we return to a regular classroom, our teachers will meet their students where they are and support them with the full understanding that learning was interrupted. Until then, we appreciate the privilege of working in partnership with you to continue learning at home.
RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES
We encourage you to visit the BC Ministry of Education's B.C. Keep Learning website. It is updated daily, and includes tips for staying healthy, suggestions for structuring learning at home, and a list of recommended websites and resources to support learning while families are at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic and suspension of in-class instruction.
