On Monday evening, students from Carisbrooke Elementary's Division 1 Grade 6/7 Class were honoured as winners of a local climate challenge contest with a pizza party at the District of North Vancouver.
This April and May, the Grade 6/7 Carisbrooke students participated in a four-week challenge as part of their current Science unit on climate change, and past unit on different energy types. The contest - called the 'Cool It! Climate Challenge' - was sponsored by the Municipal District of North Vancouver and the BCSEA (BC Sustainable Energy Association).
About the Challenge
As part of the 'Cool It! Climate Challenge', students were tasked with trying to reduce their family's carbon footprint through a series of challenges over a four-week duration.
The challenges were rated from easy, medium to difficult. Difficult challenges earned more points but usually required help from an adult or a cost of some sort, whereas easy challenges could be completed by a student on their own.
After an initial Carbon Footprint Quiz, and a presentation by the BCSEA in the classroom, the class dedicated themselves to set goals, reflect on attempts, and share creative ideas that worked at home for approximately 10 - 30 minutes each day.
Students documented their entries and points earned in a journal.
Challenge Winners
As winners, over 20 students were prized with a pizza party and shared a five-minute presentation on climate change at the Municipal Hall on Monday night.
