Library

The school library contains a vast selection of fiction and non-fiction for all levels as well as research materials.  The selection of these resources is based on classroom needs and individual student interests.  There are several computers in the library for research and word processing.

Gifted Program

The school district offers programs for the 2% of students who are academically gifted.  These students demonstrate or show potential for exceptional cognitive abilities (academic ability, creativity, and task commitment) and are designated through testing and screening processes.

Band/Strings Program

Band and Strings are district fee-paying programs offered to intermediate children (band: grades 5-7) (strings: grades 4-7). Students rehearse twice a week.

Students’ Council

The Students' Council plans events and special functions to enhance our school.  Members are elected to positions and meet bi-weekly throughout the year.

Peer Counsellors

Peer counsellors are grade six and seven students who assist on the playground at recess and at lunch.  They are easily identified by their bright red vests.  The peer counsellors have been trained to assist in solving problems and help students make the most of their recess and lunch breaks.

Grade Seven Awards Program

The purpose of the Awards Program is to recognize and celebrate student excellence in the areas of academics, athletics, fine arts, and service.

Extra Curricular Programs

Highlands School staff offers a variety of extra-curricular programs for older students.  Teacher volunteers run the programs and often, parents assist in the transportation and coaching of students.  Although the variety of program changes from year to year, some of the programs are: Volleyball (6-7), Cross-Country (3-7), Basketball (6-7), Track and Field (4-7) and Choir (4-7).
