QM Home Language Day
This year, the United Nations honoured International Mother Language Day on Sunday, February 21. In connection to this, QM has set aside Feb 22, as our very own “Home Language Day”, to honour and celebrate our community’s cultural diversity. Leading up to this day students and community members were invited to take action by writing stories in their home language. These were shared in classrooms and posted in hallways for others to enjoy.
On February 22 we encouraged everyone – students, staff members, and parents/guardians - to wear colours of their home country’s flag, or dress in traditional clothing of their home country. |

| Building knowledge and understanding through Black History Month In our journey to better understand the contributions and struggles of BIPOC Canadians, Queen Mary students have engaged in an abundance learning opportunities and reflection this month, including taking part in ZOOM sessions with authors and community members. Many of our classes have had the opportunity to take part in the “Black History Matters" sessions led by Giselle Clarke-Trenaman, Production Coordinator of Presentation House Theatre. In addition to learning about Black history in Canada, these sessions have provided students the opportunity to see representations of Black people through different mediums (books, toys, film, music, art etc.), and learn about modern Black community leaders on the North Shore and Greater Vancouver.

Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser - February 14th
| Heart and Stroke "Jump Rope for Heart" Foundation Fundraiser will culminate with our event day on TUESDAY, February 14th, when all students will take part in various skipping and other fitness training activities in the gym. The money collected for the Heart and Stroke foundation goes directly to help Canadians through medical research and treatment and support for those who suffer from heart attacks or stroke. |  |  |
Field Studies Program at the NVSD Cheakamus Centre
Students from Queen Mary Community Elementary enjoy a week of field studies, recreational activities, and evening programs as they engage in educational experiences that are inspired by nature at the North Vancouver School Districts' unique environmental learning centre.
We thank the Canadian Wildlife Federation for the grant we received from them, which assisted in covering some of the costs of this program.
