Sutherland Sabres!
Sutherland Student-Athletes are provided with opportunities and unforgettable experiences thanks to the efforts and time of volunteers. Staff, Parents, Community adults, and Youth coaches all form the nucleus of leadership guiding Athletic programs. Sutherland Athletics, lead by the Athletic Directors Chris Madill and Salemah Shidian and Vice-Principal Paul Ruben is working hard to make the job of the volunteer as easy as possible, while still maintaining the high standards of safety and policy set-out by the School Board and BC School Sports.
Please visit the: Sutherland Athletics website , for up-to-date information about schedules, teams, etc.
Spectator Expectations
We are happy to host players, staff and supporters for our Sutherland Teams and for all the players, staff and supporters of Visiting Teams. Being a supporter of a team and its players is one of the many positive aspects of sport. Please read our Spectator Expectations and maintain a positive atmosphere while on campus for sporting events.
Student Athlete Expectations
Learning cooperation in a competitive environment, improving your skill and fitness levels, and making new friends are only a few of the benefits of being a Student Athlete. Being a Student Athlete in the Sutherland Athletic Program is also a privilege. Student Athletes represent themselves, the team, the sport and Sutherland Secondary School while traveling, at practice, during play and while learning in the school and on the field of play. This carries with it certain standards that must be upheld. Student Athletes are making a commitment to be responsible for maintaining the balance between sport, student academic responsibilities, behaviour as well as other life commitments. Staff and community coaches voluntarily give their time, and therefore athletes should do their best to give full commitment to activities in which they participate. Game officials must be shown respect at all times as they are integral for all athletics programs to exits. Please read these expectations carefully.

The Athletics Program at Sutherland recognizes student athletes in a number of ways through the school year.
Athlete of the month
This recognition is given to up to two student athletes each month for their commitment and performance on and off the field of play for that month. Feedback from coaches and members of the Athletic Council provide the candidates for this recognition. The student athletes named will be announced on the P.A. at school and noted in the School Newsletter. Please see photographs of recipients and physical signature of this award in the Trophy Case next to the PHE office in the A (athletics) wing of the school.
Year end Athletics BBQ
The year end Athletics BBQ is hosted at Sutherland each June on the east plaza and in the multipurpose room. Invitations are sent to student athletes and families in late May to invite them to the event. This is a celebration of our student athletes efforts throughout the year, the success of the teams in their seasons and a big thank you to our volunteers, the Awards below are handed out at the BBQ. These awards are reviewed by the AD and the Athletic council.
Year End Athletic Recognition:

This is determined in consultation with the Athletic Council, AD, and coaches. These are awarded by grade and are often given to two student athletes per grade. Depending on the depth of the grade level there may be multiple winners. These student athletes have shown exceptional commitment to the team, have shown exceptional performance on the field of play, makes others around them better, have been a model student athlete, and have contributed to athletics in each season.

The Most Improved Athlete recognition is given to a member of a sports team who has shown significant growth and progress throughout the season. The recipient of this award has shown dedication, perseverance, skill development, and positive attitude throughout the season. The recipient of this award serves as an inspiration to their teammates, demonstrating the value of hard work and the potential for continuous improvement in sports and in life.
Chen Chen Sway Award
To be considered for the Chen Chen Sway, student-athletes must demonstrate exemplary behavior both on and off the field. This includes showing respect for coaches, teammates, opponents, officials, and spectators. Additionally, candidates should display integrity, fairness, and a positive attitude, regardless of the outcome of the game. Acts of sportsmanship such as helping an opponent who is injured or congratulating the opposing team after a hard-fought match are also taken into account. Finally, nominees should exhibit leadership qualities and serve as role models for their peers, embodying the principles of good sportsmanship in all aspects of their athletic endeavors.
The Sutherland Athletics Council reviews the process of athletics recognition each year.
