The Flower Beadwork People

Métis are known as the Flower Beadwork People.

Métis artisan Lisa Shepherd and Kristi Bridgeman have released a Métis Trade Routes of the Pacific Northwest (British Columbia) 1806-1886 map.

The original piece is made with glass beads, porcupine quills, sepia ink, watercolour and stroud. “This map shows the trade routes and historical landing places of Métis people in BC, indicated by 'mousetracks' and flower beadwork." [reference]

Louis Riel Day

November 16 is recognized annually across Canada as Louis Riel Day. November 16 is the anniversary of Louis Riel's execution in 1885. Riel is honoured and recognized for his fight for Métis rights.

November is also Métis Awareness Month. Learn more about Louis Riel HERE and about the Métis history in British Columbia HERE. 

In Manitoba, Louis Riel Day is a provincial statutory holiday observed on the third Monday in February. [reference]

Métis Flag

The infinity symbol on the flag represents the joining of two cultures and that the Métis culture will exist forever. You can learn more about the Métis Flag HERE.
