Orange Shirt Day
is recognized across Canada annually
on September 30. This date is significant as it is the approximate date that
children would be taken to residential school.
History of Orange
Shirt Day
Orange Shirt Day
was started by Phyllis Webstad, who
is Northern Secwpemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation, to
honour and recognize all those who attended a residential school because she
believes, “Every Child Matters.” You can read more about Phyllis' Story HERE. You will
also find French translations.
Phyllis Webstad has published
a primary book to complement her book, The Orange Shirt
Story.
