The Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art is situated within the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations.
The Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art, in North Vancouver, opened its doors in 2012 to provide art enrichment opportunities for children and to ignite community engagement through exceptional Canadian Art curation and education.
In January 2020, during his 101st year, Gordon Smith passed away in his West Vancouver home. He was a celebrated Canadian artist whose work can be seen in collections such as the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC., and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England.
Throughout his career, Gordon believed in the value of supporting art education for youth. This dedication to the arts led Gordon to mentor young artists including some of today's most influential names in contemporary Canadian art. He found great satisfaction in uniting people through his art. Even throughout the last years of his life, he still found time to mentor young artists and give painting lessons to children in his neighbourhood.
Gordon's work and dedication over the past half century has influenced the progression of Canadian art and helped to shape the lives of thousand of young artists.
It is this legacy that we continue at the Gallery, to nurture and develop a love of the arts in our communities.
