With the coastal mountains as a backdrop, we live and learn in a wonderful natural environment; filled with huge trees, wildlife, and running water. An outdoor classroom allows us to connect with this environment. We are very fortunate to have a courtyard at the center of the school. It is a unique outdoor space that has become an essential learning space for the school. The We have been working with the District of North Vancouver and the Wild Bird Trust to plant native plants in the planters to compliment the large bushes and trees already growing. We have also planted potatoes, wildflowers and bulbs. These planters are updated every year with new flowers and vegetables. Each class has a space in a planter.
At Seymour Heights Elementary, we value inclusion, we value one another, and we value the outdoors. Creating an outdoor classroom space has allowed students to learn in the outdoors, form a deeper connection with nature, and ultimately enhance our children’s lives for the better.
