Excusing Absences and Lates:
Please report student absences by email: sutherland_attendance@sd44.ca.
Please ensure the word “absence” appears in the subject line and please
put your child’s full name and grade in the body of the email. You can
also notify the school of a students late arrival or early dismissal.
Students who are late should go directly to their class NOT to the office.
Parents may also leave a message at 604-903-3500 to report a student absence, late arrival or early dismissal. Students cannot call in their own absence. Only messages from parents and legal guardians are accepted. We prefer you to email this information to the school whenever possible.
Format when reporting an absence:
- First Name
- Last Name
- Grade
- Date of absence and length of absence (whole day, portion of day or mulit-days)
- Reason for absence (e.g. ill, appointment, vacation)
- If the student will be late or leaving early please note the arrival and departure times.
*It is NOT necessary to provide your telephone number as it is already in our system
Examples of what NOT to say:
“Hopefully will be in…”, “might be away...”, “if feeling better will be in later…” (students must stay home when ill).
Excused
absences will be entered into the school attendance system so teachers
will see that the absence is excused. Parents/Guardians are urged to try
to schedule appointments for students outside of school time whenever
possible.
What to do when you receive a phone call stating your child was absent from a class:
If your child says they were in class, they must speak with the teacher who marked them away. Only the classroom teacher can verify and change the attendance.
Leaving the school once classes have begun: If a student is leaving the school for any reason, parental permission is required and they must sign out at the office. This is extremely important in case of an emergency.
Planned Family Absences:
Parents are discouraged from planning family vacations when school is in session. If students are going to miss school for family vacations, they should complete a Planned Absence form. This should be obtained from the office or below prior to leaving.
