The following letter was delivered to residents in the Cloverley neighbourhood.
November 17, 2023
Dear Cloverley Neighbourhood Residents,
Further to our
initial correspondence dated September 29, 2023,
which shared information about the new elementary school project in the
Cloverley neighbourhood, we would like to provide you with additional
information regarding the upcoming tree removal, site fencing, and
public information meeting.
Tree removal
A certified arborist has
completed an inventory and risk assessment of all trees on the site (440
Hendry Avenue, North Vancouver). The arborist has identified 29 dead or
dying trees that present a safety risk and must be removed. In
addition, 6 trees affected by the demolition of the closed school must
be removed. A total of 35 trees will be removed starting on December 4,
2023. The City of North Vancouver has issued a Tree Removal Permit for
this work.
Significant trees around the building and parking lot
identified for protection will be pruned by a certified arborist, who
will also supervise the demolition and ensure tree protection measures
are followed.
Two signs, which will be posted on the east and
west sides of the property, will indicate the trees that will be
removed. An image noting the trees that will be removed is included with
this letter; it will also be posted to the school district’s website,
under
Capital Plan & Projects.
Site fencing
The existing closed school will be demolished in 2024. To
ensure public safety, the school district will be fencing off the area
around the existing closed school soon. The fencing will not impact
access to the public amenities on the site (e.g., tennis courts,
playground, park).
Public information meeting
The school district will host a public information meeting on
Wednesday, January 17, 2024, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the gymnasium of
Ridgeway Elementary School (420 8th Street East, North Vancouver). This
will be an opportunity for community members to learn about the project,
and for school district staff and consultants engaged in the project to
address questions, including those related to site location, traffic,
trees, and green space.
We are excited to bring a new elementary school to the
Cloverley neighbourhood in time for the start of the 2026/27 school
year, and we thank the community for its support as the project work
continues.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Facilities & Planning at
fpadmin@sd44.ca. As a reminder, project updates are posted to the school district’s website, under
Capital Plan & Projects.
Respectfully,
Dr. Pius Ryan
