Millwrights are often described as “jack of all trades” as they are expected to install, maintain and repair all types of machinery and heavy mechanical equipment in various industries. They work from plans and blueprints, install equipment and align parts or components (BCIT).
What does a millwright do?
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, overhaul and repair stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment.
- Construction millwrights are employed by millwrighting contractors. Industrial mechanics are employed in manufacturing plants, utilities and other industrial establishments (Job Bank, Government of Canada).
What do I need to start?
- Entering Grade 11 or Grade 12
- Good employability skills
- A willingness to learn
- English 12 and Math 11 are required
- Good command of oral and written English
- Sufficient physical strength and stamina to meet the demands of the work, good hearing, good eyesight, manual dexterity, and hand/eye coordination
- Good theoretical and practical mathematical skills, along with mechanical aptitude
