Information for parents and caregivers

The Ministry of Education and Child Care has put together the web page K-12 Reporting Information for Parents and Caregivers as a summary on the new reporting order. It is also an excellent starting point for students who wish to gain a better understanding of the reporting order. It is available in eight languages.

English Language Learners

Descriptive Feedback

In all three terms in elementary school and in both semesters of secondary, descriptive feedback describing what the student can do, areas for further growth, and ways of supporting their learning should be included, especially in subject areas where the student’s language proficiency is impeding the student from demonstrating their learning in relation to the Learning Standards of the curriculum.

Proficiency Scale Indicator

Term 1 & 2 (Written Learning Updates): To provide learners the opportunity to learn and grow, a proficiency scale indicator might not be provided for subject areas where the student’s language proficiency is impeding the student from demonstrating their learning in relation to the Learning Standards of the curriculum. In this case, the mark area would be left blank.

Term 3 or Final (Summary of Learning): As the Summary of Learning is the final communication of student learning, a proficiency scale indicator will be provided for all subject areas. For those subject areas where the student’s language proficiency is still impeding a student from demonstrating their learning in relation to the Learning Standards of the curriculum, the descriptive feedback will contain a note that explains that the student is being assessed in relation to the student’s goals for the language proficiency, and not the Learning Standards of the curriculum.
