Student-Teacher-Family Conference

Overview

Across the North Vancouver School District, there are a number of initiatives in place with respect to the delivery of curriculum, assessment and reporting. Within the Carson Graham and Sutherland Family of Schools, one initiative is the “Student/Teacher/Family Conference” as part of the reporting practices at elementary schools.

The Student/Teacher/Family Conference plays an important part in establishing learning goals for the year and is held each Fall during the first term, generally over a period of four days in November.

The conferences provide an opportunity for students, parents/guardians and teachers to collectively evaluate and reflect on student learning early in the year. The conferences emphasize goal-setting and student self-reflection.

At the conference, both the student and teacher share examples of learning, reflect on areas of strength and identify areas for further growth. Teachers also share their insights and observations of the student’s progress, and discuss how best to support the student’s learning.

Prior to the conference, students will prepare a reflection in class and plan their learning goals for the year. These learning goals will be discussed with parents/guardians during the conference, and together students, parents and teachers will come up with ways to achieve these goals. On the first term student report card, a Conference Goals summary will be included in place of teacher comments.

Reporting and Report Card Process:

There are slight differences in the reporting and report card process between schools in the Carson Graham Family of Schools and those in the Sutherland Family of Schools.

Schools in the Carson Graham Family of Schools use NVSD Performance Standards* (modified from the Ministry of Education BC Performance Standards) for ALL grades. Those in the Sutherland Family of Schools use NVSD Performance Standards for students in Grades K-3 only, and provide letter grades for students in Grades 4-7.
