Bantam Boys Rugby

The Royals bantam boy's rugby had a tough, but great season. They showed resilience throughout the season and always gave their full potential. They had many great games, but one that stood out was their final game against Rockridge. This was their most important game of the season, and they did not disappoint, coming very close to upsetting a heavily favored team in the league. The players came into the season eager to learn, which made them a skillful and strong team. We look forward to seeing these players grow and continue to show their ability in the Handsworth rugby program

The Royals had an amazing season. The team participated in a tournament in South Delta and placed tied for first. The Juvies came out with outstanding defence and an even stronger offence, resulting in their victory against Argyle Secondary. However, they met Argyle again in the semi-finals. They gave it all they could yet the Royals suffered a disappointing loss against Argyle and finished 3rd. The highlight of their season was their competitive games against Argyle.

Players on the team have also said that everybody is very supportive of each other and works well together. The coaches are also very proud of their players for their wonderful season and the fight they put up. They constantly reminded their players to “get comfortable being uncomfortable" on the court, which lead them to many victories throughout the season.

The Handsworth Blue Junior girls team had a fun and successful season, marked by incredible goals, intense competition against some formidable opponents, and plenty of laughs and camaraderie—even during those early morning practices. One of the season's highlights was the Golden Pumpkin Tournament, where the girls battled hard against tough competition and proudly earned a 2nd place finish in their tier. When asked about the season, Coach Joe Timlin reflected, “The best part of coaching is watching your team’s personality reveal itself over the course of a season. This team is uniquely positive, kind, and fun, and features some stellar athletes. I’m really looking forward to seeing what they will accomplish together over the next several years!” With such a talented and close-knit group, it's clear that Handsworth has a strong cohort of young women who will continue to make the school proud for years to come.

Junior Girls Field Hockey (Gold Team)

The Junior girls gold field hockey team had an astounding season this year. The girls were undefeated through League play with a record of 4-0-1, which had them finishing the regular season at the top of the standings. They played 4th place West Vancouver Secondary in the semi-finals game and won 5-1. This took our royals to the final game for the North Shore Secondary Schools Athletic Association (NSSSAA) Junior Field Hockey banner and trophy. The girls used their teamwork and superior passing skills to defeat Collingwood in that game 3-1. The coach of this team, Laurel Douglas had some things to say about this spectacular season. Laurel stated, “Winning the banner with this group of athletes was definitely a season highlight, but the way they rose to the challenge of playing provincially-ranked Senior teams at the the Golden Pumpkin Tournament and used good communication and teamwork to beat older teams was really special. We had so much fun as a group and everyone contributed.” Overall this was a season to remember, the girls showed the power of hard work, dedication and teamwork. All of these factors lead to the girls immense success.

Senior Girls Field Hockey

Our senior girl’s field hockey team capped off an incredible season with a tight win against Kamloops in the provincial championships, bringing home the banner for the third year in row. The team’s achievements this season were nothing short of extraordinary as they also earned two additional banners: the North Shore banner as well as the Vancouver Sea to Sky banner. These accomplishments reflect on the team’s commitment and dedication to representing Handsworth with pride. Their success is a testament to the hours of early morning rainy practices, long car rides, and their unbreakable bond as a team.

“Not only did they bring a fierce sense of competition to every game, but they also brought joy and laughter wherever they went. They consistently showed up unified and ready for everything. Congratulations, girls-you did it!” Ashleigh Gold and Jessica Bratty (Coaches)

Swimming Team

The team consisted of 30 students from grades 8-12. The team’s volunteer coach is Karim Fahmy, who has swam competitively for ten years and has a deep passion for the sport. The team had swimmers with extensive racing experience and those brand new to the sport. They all demonstrated outstanding commitment, attending early morning practices every Wednesday and Friday from 7-8 a.m. or training with their club during the week.

They participated in two exhibition swim meets at Harry Jerome Recreational Centre, competing against other schools from the zone. The goal of the exhibition meets was to gain experience with racing and work with other students in relay team events.

We had 27 swimmers participate in the 2024 BC School Sports (BCSS) Vancouver Sea to Sky Zone Meet on October 25th, from which the following eight advanced to finals in the 2024 BCSS Provincial Championship Meet on November 15-16th:

  • -Sang Yoon Park in 50M Back
  • -Ziming Mao in 50M Free, 100M Free
  • -Burton Li in 100M Breastroke

Our relay teams were also able to advance to finals during the Provincial Championships:

  • Girls 400M Free Relay with Julia Runzer, Nirvana Moafi, Sarah MacPherson and Sang Yoon Park
  • Mixed 200M Free Relay with Ziming Mao, Mia Lin, Sang Yoon Park and Burton Li

A highlight of this year would be Sang Yoon Park, who, even after years of leaving competitive swimming, has returned and is focused on competing. She was initially an alternate on the mixed relay team, but due to the injuries of another participant, she stepped in with little notice and allowed her teammates to compete and advance to the finals
